SPINAL DECOMPRESSION THERAPY
There is hope for healing relief with
Non-surgical spinal decompression
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Negative pressure is created within the discs by providing a series of slow pulls, holds and releases. Over time, this vacuum effect may, in many cases, help the bulging disc material to be ‘drawn back into place’. The fibres in the disc's outer ring are also helped to heal by the increased nutrients that circulate in the area due to the gentle pumping movement created around the disc and facet joints.
WHO CAN USE IT?
The best candidates are patients who have tried everything else with no success for bulging or herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, failed spinal surgery syndrome, spinal stenosis, facet joint syndrome, or chronic neck or lower back pain with no clear causation or reason.
HOW DO I START?
Just book a spinal decompression consultation with one of our chiropractors. A full neurological examination will need to be performed, and your X-rays and CT/ MRI scans will need to be studied so our chiropractors can determine your exact program and script for your treatment on our chiropractic spinal decompression table.
ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS
  • What does it look like? It looks like a big chair, but it is so much more than that! Once you are secure and comfortable in the chair, it leans you into place and then decompresses your lower spine. There are no complicated straps—just one that secures your legs to the bottom of the chair. Additionally, the chair can swing laterally for maximal decompression of your lumbar disc issues.
  • What does it feel like?  Apart from an initial pulling sensation, which you quickly get used to, it is relaxing. Many people fall asleep! During or after treatment, some people may initially have some flare-up of their pain. This is normal and temporary and should pass within a few days. We recommend ice applied to the area that has been treated, rather than heat, and the use of Metagenics Inflavinoid Intensive Care to reduce inflammation and promote healing. If you have leg pain or pins and needles, you may experience a temporary increase in back pain as the leg symptoms disappear. This is also normal, expected, and temporary and is a sign that you are improving. We do regular reassessments of your condition so that we can adjust your care as needed with the aim of you getting maximum results as soon as possible.
  • How is Spinal Decompression different from traction or inversion beds? Traction and inversion beds do not provide the special logarithmic movement, systematically increasing and decreasing the decompression, as the Back on Trac system does. This cycle of movement is a critical part of the success of this therapy, as it brings essential oxygen and nutrients to the area to help it heal.
  • Does it replace traditional chiropractic care?  Spinal decompression is best used with your regular chiropractic treatment to bring fuller spine healing. However, suppose you have not received results from previous chiropractic treatments. In that case, you may find this new type of treatment will likely be able to help, showing you a whole new way forward with this treatment style specific for disc and arthritis issues. No manipulation is usually involved, so this technique suits people who prefer a gentler approach.
  • What success rate does this treatment have?  Generally, decompression is improving in approximately 90% of our decompression patients. However, results can never be promised, and you may still require surgery. We will monitor your progress and refer you to your doctor should you/ we not be happy with your progress. The research to support the use of Spinal Decompression Therapy can be found here: Spinal Decompression Research
  •  Will I feel immediately better? Some people feel a change after just one or two sessions, others after about 5 -8 sessions, and others not until their 20th or 25th session. It all depends on how much inflammation you have, how long you have had the problem, how severe the problem is, and how well you follow our guidelines regarding nutrition, supplements, and activities. Every case is different, and we cannot guarantee how long it may take you to improve or if you will improve.
  • Are there any reasons it may not be suitable for me?  There are a few circumstances that may prevent you from being a candidate for decompression therapy. Some of these reasons include if you weigh over 155kg, have severe vascular disease or have severe osteoporosis. Your case will be assessed, and if we need to seek approval from your medical specialist, we will not start care until they have cleared you.
  • How do I know if my case is suitable for decompression therapy? You will need a Decompression Assessment with one of our caring chiropractors, and you will need to bring any X-rays, scans, or MRIs with you. Allow 30 minutes for this visit, plus 15 minutes to fill out paperwork beforehand. If we do not think that your case is suitable for decompression therapy, we will refer you back to your doctor or another health professional for a different approach to pain relief
WHEN A NEGATIVE IS ACTUALLY  A POSITIVE
Through the logarithmic stretch and release protocols of the decompression procedure, negative pressure is created in the disc over time. This vacuum effect draws any herniated disc material back into the disc. And by reversing the effects of axial load or compression in the spine, increased circulation occurs which aids in the healing process.
